Why We're a Private-Pay Practice

We don't accept insurance directly, and there's a good reason for that. Many of our clients specifically choose to pay out of pocket because they want their mental health care to stay private.

Your privacy stays yours

When you use insurance for therapy, your therapist is required to assign a mental health diagnosis to your file. That diagnosis becomes part of your permanent medical record, and your insurance company has access to your session notes. For people in careers that involve security clearances, government roles, or health-related evaluations, that can have real consequences. Paying privately means none of that goes on record.

You control your care

Insurance companies decide how many sessions you get and what types of treatment they'll cover. With private pay, those decisions stay between you and your therapist. If you need 90-minute sessions, you get them. If you want to come weekly for six months, that's your call. Nobody outside this room gets a vote.

No diagnosis required to get help

Insurance carriers require a "medically necessary" diagnosis before they'll pay for treatment. But not everyone who needs therapy has a diagnosable disorder. Sometimes you're going through a hard season, or your family communication has broken down, or you're burned out and running on fumes. You shouldn't need a label to get support.

Superbills for Out-of-Network Reimbursement

Even though we don't bill insurance directly, many clients are able to get partial reimbursement from their insurance provider. Here's how it works:

  1. 1 You pay for your session at the time of service.
  2. 2 We provide you with a superbill — a detailed receipt that includes diagnostic codes, session dates, and fees.
  3. 3 You submit the superbill to your insurance company for potential out-of-network reimbursement.

Reimbursement amounts vary depending on your specific plan. We recommend calling your insurance provider to ask about your out-of-network mental health benefits before your first session.

HSA & FSA Cards Accepted

If you have a Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA), you can use it to pay for your therapy sessions. These accounts let you use pre-tax dollars for qualified medical expenses, which includes counseling and therapy.

Just bring your HSA or FSA card to your session, and we'll process it like any other payment. It's one of the most straightforward ways to make private-pay therapy more affordable.

Common Questions About Therapy Costs

What does a free consultation include?

The 15-minute consultation is a chance for us to talk briefly about what's going on and whether North Star is a good fit for you. It's not a therapy session, but it gives you a feel for how I work and a chance to ask questions before committing. There's no cost and no obligation.

Why does the 60-minute session only include 50-55 minutes of talk time?

The remaining time is used for clinical documentation — writing session notes and updating your treatment plan. This is standard practice in therapy and ensures that your care stays organized and consistent from session to session.

How do I know if I should choose a 60- or 90-minute session?

For most individual clients, 60 minutes works well. The 90-minute option tends to be a better fit for couples, families, or when you're working through something that needs more room to unfold. We can figure out the right length together during your consultation or intake.

What if I want to use my insurance?

We don't bill insurance directly, but we can provide you with a superbill to submit to your insurance company for potential out-of-network reimbursement. Many clients find they're able to recover a portion of their session costs this way. It's worth calling your insurance provider to ask about your out-of-network mental health benefits.

What forms of payment do you accept?

We accept all major credit and debit cards, as well as HSA and FSA cards. Payment is collected at the time of your session.
